Removing Backgrounds
Glintia has two ways to get rid of a background, depending on what you’re working with:
- Pictures: AI background removal cuts the subject out of any photo in one click. You can refine the result with a brush.
- Video: you remove a solid-colored backdrop, such as a green screen, with the Remove Color adjustment. For footage shot on black, a blend mode does the job.
Remove the background from a picture
Section titled “Remove the background from a picture”- Select the picture on the canvas
- Click Remove BG on its toolbar. The picture shows a spinner and the button counts up (Removing…) while the work runs
- When “Background removed successfully!” appears, the picture shows only its subject
You can also open AI Studio, choose the Image tab and click Remove background while a picture is selected.
Background removal costs 0.25 AI credits per picture and is available on every plan. If it fails, the credits are refunded. The cut-out is a mask over your original picture, so nothing is lost: you can refine it or remove it later.
Clean up the edges with the Mask Editor
Section titled “Clean up the edges with the Mask Editor”After a picture’s background is removed, the Remove BG button becomes Edit Mask.
- Select the picture and click Edit Mask, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Cmd+Shift+M on a Mac). The Mask Editor opens over the picture
- Choose Erase to remove parts the AI kept, or Restore to bring back parts it removed
- Set the Brush Size (5 to 100 px)
- Paint over the picture
- Click Apply to save, or Cancel to throw your strokes away
To go back to the original picture with its background, click Remove Mask in the Mask Editor and confirm.
Key out a green screen in a video
Section titled “Key out a green screen in a video”The Remove Color adjustment makes one color transparent wherever it appears in a clip, so whatever is behind the clip on the scene shows through.
- Put the background you want (a picture, another clip or a color) on the scene, and the green-screen clip above it
- Select the clip and click Edit Video. The panel opens on the Adjustments tab
- Scroll to the Effects group and find Remove Color
- Click the color swatch and pick the color of your backdrop. It starts at pure green
- Drag the Remove Color slider to widen the range of shades that are removed. Raise it if a green fringe stays around hair and edges, and lower it if parts of the subject start to disappear
The same Remove Color adjustment works on pictures, in the Edit Image panel.
To turn the key off, click Reset all at the top of the adjustments. This clears every adjustment slider on the clip. The Reset link next to Remove Color only puts it back to its starting values, which still remove pure green.
Tips for clean keys
Section titled “Tips for clean keys”- Light the screen evenly. Shadows and creases are different shades and need a higher slider value, which eats into the subject
- Keep the subject a little away from the screen so it doesn’t cast a green glow on them
- Check the key at several points in the clip, not just the first frame
Lay footage shot on black over your scene
Section titled “Lay footage shot on black over your scene”Fire, smoke, sparks, light leaks and similar stock clips are often filmed on a black background. You don’t need to key these:
- Select the clip and click Edit Video
- In the Blend row, choose Screen
Screen hides black and keeps the bright parts, so the effect sits naturally on whatever is beneath it. Blend is also in More Tools. For effects you can recolor and resize without any footage, see Visual Effects (VFX).
Put text behind the subject of a photo
Section titled “Put text behind the subject of a photo”Behind subject cuts the subject out of a photo and places your text between the subject and its background, the popular “text behind the person” look.
- Put your text on top of the photo
- Select the photo, open More Tools and click Behind subject
- Click Cut out subject (0.25 credits)
Every text already on the photo now goes behind the subject.
- Move the text over the photo
- Select the text, open More Tools and click Behind subject
- Choose Behind subject, or one with an entrance: Rise from behind, Slide behind or Pop behind
The cut costs 0.25 credits the first time. Once the photo has a subject cut out, other texts can use it for free.
Once the subject is cut out, Bring in front puts a text back on top, Refine edges opens the Mask Editor on the cut-out, and Remove subject layer removes the cut-out.
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”| Tool | AI credits |
|---|---|
| Remove BG on a picture | 0.25 per picture, refunded on failure |
| Behind subject on a photo | 0.25 for the first cut-out |
| Mask Editor | Free |
| Remove Color (green screen) and Blend | Free |
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- No Remove BG button: it appears when exactly one picture or a picture background is selected. Video clips don’t have it.
- “Not Supported”: the picture is from a source Glintia can’t process. Upload it yourself and try again.
- Parts of the subject went missing: open Edit Mask, choose Restore and paint them back.
- The green screen leaves a halo: raise the Remove Color slider a little at a time, or change the swatch to a color closer to the actual shade of your screen.
- The keyed area shows a plain color: that’s the scene’s background showing through. Put the picture or clip you want behind the subject below the keyed clip in the layer order. See Backgrounds and Colors.
